Programme Synopsis

Using blockchain technology, it is now possible to digitize financial assets such as securities and funds, through the use of security tokens. The presentation from Sidley Austin and Liquefy will introduce blockchain technology and the concept of tokenization, explore the potential benefits of tokenization, look at transactions and funds that are adopting tokenization and consider some of the challenges for the tokenization of funds. The lunch talk will also discuss related regulatory issues in Singapore and Hong Kong for offering and marketing of fund-related security tokens.

Mr Han Ming Ho
Partner and Co-leader

Han Ming Ho is a co-leader of Sidley’s Asia Investment Funds practice. He focuses on fund formation of open-ended and close-ended entities and related regulatory matters as well as regularly advises fund managers on the establishment of business operations in Singapore, together with the establishment, structuring and registration of investment funds in Singapore and various other Asia Pacific jurisdictions.

He also served on the Asia-Pacific Board (Council) Director and Singapore National Group Chairman of AIMA (Alternative Investment Management Association), and currently sits as a member of the Advocacy Committee of SVCA (Singapore Venture Capital & Private Equity Association), a member of the Regulatory Committee of IMAS (Investment Management Association of Singapore) and a member of the Fund Management Working Group, IBF (The Institute of Banking & Finance).

Ms Joy Lam
Sidley Austin LLP

Joy Lam is a partner in the Investment Funds practice in Sidley’s Hong Kong office. She focuses primarily on investment funds and covers a wide range of investment fund formation transactions, including real estate funds, private equity funds, infrastructure funds, crossover hybrid funds and hedge funds. She also has significant experience in mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance transactions and advises investment funds in relation to joint ventures, downstream acquisitions and disposals, upstream management and seeding arrangements and other corporate matters. Joy recently advised a fund manager on the groundbreaking establishment of a tokenized closed-end fund, the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

Joy was named a “Rising Star” by Law360 in its 2018 annual report that recognizes the “top legal talent under 40” who are practicing at a level “usually seen from veteran attorneys.” Joy is also recognized by IFLR1000 2019 as a notable practitioner in the Hong Kong investment funds area.

Ms Josephine Law
Sidley Austin LLP

Josephine Law is counsel in the Investment Funds practice in Sidley’s Singapore office. She focuses her practice in both registered fund transactions and financial services regulatory advice. Josephine has significant experience in establishing domestic funds, listing exchange traded funds on the Singapore Exchange, registering both domestic and offshore funds for retail distribution, and registering funds for restricted offers to accredited investors.
Josephine frequently advises on the establishment and licensing of fund management clients, as well as handling license applications with the Monetary Authority of Singapore. She also regularly advises on financial services regulatory issues relating to payment systems, stored value facilities, remittance business, credit cards and merchant acquiring, as well as regulated products and services under the Securities and Futures Act and Financial Advisers Act.

Mr Philip Pang
Chief Commercial Officer

Philip is Chief Commercial Officer of Liquefy, a venture-backed technology platform which enables tokenization of illiquid assets such as real estate, funds, and other assets using blockchain technology. Liquefy has raised more than US$3m since late 2018. Previously with Colliers International, a NASDAQ listed commercial real estate consultancy, advising multinational companies in all aspects of real estate, with a key focus on flexible workspace, funds, and asset management occupiers. Mentor for TechStars Colliers PropTech Accelerator, a global initiative to develop and bring to market new Property Technologies, with a focus on Blockchain and Tokenizing Real Estate with Digital Securities. Philip is also an Advisor to Genesis Block, a leading Digital Assets OTC trading centre and blockchain community builder in Hong Kong. He’s launched two start-ups, endorsed by Google Empowering Young Entrepreneurs Program, Cyberport CCMF Fund, and Esri Start-up Program.
